Congressman Jeff Fortenberry objects to the characterization fellow Republican Donald Trump has made of Muslims.
Fortenberry contends Trump is off base when he says Muslims should not be allowed to enter the United States for now.
“Well, I like the way my friend, Carly Fiorina (GOP presidential candidate), has said this; that President Obama has underreacted, Donald Trump has overreacted. You cannot classify a whole group of people based upon their religion and determine their intent. That’s not fair. It’s not American,” Fortenberry tells Kevin Thomas, host of Drive Time Lincoln on Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN.
Trump, the front runner in the Republican presidential race, has said the United States should ban all Muslims from entering the country until the president and Congress decide how best to prevent terrorist attacks.
Fortenberry says Muslims are vital in the fight against radical, militant Islam. Fortenberry adds Muslims have an incentive to fight against extremists who pervert the teaching of their religion.
“The most people they’ve killed are innocent Muslim people. And Muslims are also involved in our military and our own national security,” according to Fortenberry. “We rely heavily on the moderate Muslim world for intelligence information. I think that’s an important point to unpack as we debate again, not someone’s religion, but someone’s value.”
Fortenberry says it is understandable that many people feel anxious about the security of the country.
