An Omaha woman originally booked for the murder of a four-year-old girl will instead be charged with intentional child abuse. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine released more details in the case this morning. Kleine says 22 year old Chelsey Cook had been Alicia Morrow’s caregiver since December of 2014 inside of a home at 31st and Franklin Street in north Omaha.
Kleine says, “On January 3, 2015, the defendant found the four year old victim lying naked on the floor in the residents. Shallow breathing. Cold to the touch. At that time the defendant failed to seek medical treatment for the child. Police responded on January 5th and found the child wrapped in plastic in the basement of the residence.”
Autopsy results were inconclusive and Kleine says the investigation into Alicia’s death continues. There were no signs of trauma on Alicia’s body.
Kleine says there was very little food found in the residence and there was a question whether how well the heat was working inside. There was only one bed inside the home. Cook also was caring for her biological child and the courts are in the process of protective custody placement.
