President Barack Obama delivered his final State of the Union Address Tuesday night and there is mixed reaction to his message. University of Nebraska – Omaha Political Science Professor Dr. Randall Adkins says his final message was much different than those previously delivered.
Dr. Adkins says President Obama tried to rally his troops – his supporters over the last eight years. He says this was much like an election speech and outlined what the priorities should be for progressives next year. Dr. Adkins also believes the address was confrontational as to what some Republicans have been saying this year and to the leadership and the majority in Congress.
Dr. Adkins says typically the State of the Union turns out to be a laundry list of priorities. He says, “This speech wasn’t as much of a laundry list as we have seen before. I think the reason for that is he knows he is not going to get anything done with Congress this year. It is an election year. It is the end of his term. They are really not going to do anything for him because he isn’t going to be around next year.”
