A volunteer for Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson’s campaign, injured in a car wreck in Iowa, has died of his injuries at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
25-year-old Braden Joplin, a student at Texas Tech University, died of injuries suffered in a traffic accident on slick roads near Atlantic, Iowa.
The Carson campaign reports a van carrying campaign volunteers slid on ice and flipped on its side. It was struck by another vehicle. Three passengers were treated and released from Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. Joplin was transferred to UNMC.
A spokesman for UNMC says Joplin’s injuries were severe. Joplin arrived at the UNMC trauma center in critical condition.
“Despite the best efforts of our medical staff, Joplin died just after 4:30 p.m. local time.” Taylor Wilson,
Senior Media Relations Coordinator for Nebraska Medicine said in a written statement.
Carson has suspended his campaign and is travelling from South Carolina to Omaha to meet with members of the family.
