A Grand Island man was killed in a traffic crash northwest of Grand Island when a SUV lost control on a snow-covered roadway, crossed the center line, and struck his car head-on.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office reports 43-year-old Leopoldo Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene, Highway 2 and Schauppsville Road near Cairo.
According to the sheriff’s office, 35-year-old Jeremiah Roberts of Ravenna lost control of his SUV while traveling south on Highway 2 when he lost control on the road, which was covered in snow and slush. The SUV hit the car head-on and came to rest in the middle of the highway. The car driven by Martinez came to rest on the south side of the highway. Martinez and two passengers were trapped in the vehicle. Emergency crews extricated them. Martinez had died in the wreck. The two passengers suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities closed a section of Highway 2 for four hours during the investigation.
