Lincoln police say a man who helped break up a fight between a man and a woman at an apartment complex was shot and killed when the man returned with a gun and started shooting Sunday morning.
Dead is 25-year-old Joshua Hartwig.
Assistant Police Chief Brian Jackson has told reporters the man and woman had been arguing about a half hour before police answered a call about a shooting.
Investigators saw Hartwig was part of a group that intervened between the man and woman. The man has been identified as 33-year-old Anthony Wells. According to police, Wells left in a car, but returned with a gun.
Jackson says Wells allegedly began shooting into the crowd that had gathered at The Willows Apartments. The crowd scattered. Multiple shots were fired, hitting a number of parked vehicles. In the aftermath, Hartwig was found with fatal wounds.
Jackson says Wells was arrested in his Omaha residence on an unrelated charge. Wells since has been charged with first degree murder.
