Friday’s nearly 12 hour standoff near 140th and Burdette Street in Omaha ended in tragedy. Brothers, 35 year old John and 41 year old Jason Edwards of Papillion were helping their sister Julie Edwards move some items from her home. She had been in a relationship with 45 year old Kenneth Clark.
Authorities say she had made prior arrangements to move some of her property from his residence. Julie, Jason and John arrived that morning with a U-Haul to remove her property from the residence. It is alleged that Clark shot both Jason and John inside the home and took Julie hostage. The standoff started around 11 a.m. and she was released from the home around 1:45 p.m.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Tom Wheeler says, “We diligently had tried throughout the day, ten – eleven hours of negotiations and it came to an impasse. He wasn’t going to come out. He was all over the map between sobbing, crying, praying. Several times he said he was going to come out but of course he never did.”
Wheeler says they introduced gas into the home after nearly eleven hours of negotiations and shortly after deputies heard what they believed was a gunshot. An Omaha Police Department robot was then sent inside to evaluate the situation and Clark was deceased in a bedroom with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation is ongoing. Clark’s death is considered an in-custody situation and a grand jury will be convened.
