Clete Blakeman says officiating in the Super Bowl was everything he hoped it would be. The former Nebraska quarterback and Omaha attorney was the referee for Super Bowl 50 when the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10.
Blakeman’s work before more than 110 million viewers even had him trending on Twitter as the #HotRef. It earned him a trip to New York for an appearance on the Today Show.
“That’s the aspect of social media because they don’t know me”, said Blakeman. “They just see me on the screen and it blows up that way. It is kind of funny.”
Blakeman began his career as an official 28 years ago and never imagined he would get a chance to work in the NFL someday, let alone a Super Bowl.
