The trial of a suspected serial killer, Anthony Garcia, is on hold for now after Douglas County District Judge Duane Dougherty recused himself on Wednesday due to health reasons.
Douglas County District Judge Gary Randall was assigned to the trial.
Douglas County Prosecutor Don Kleine was surprised with the recent turn.
“We anticipated on moving forward in Judge Dougherty’s courtroom on April 4th. This is a very unfortunate situation,” Kleine adds we need to keep this thing moving and Judge Randall will do just that.
Garcia is charged with four counts of first degree murder.
Prosecutors say he killed 11 year old Thomas Hunter and the family housekeeper Shirlee Sherman in 2008. They say he returned to Omaha in May of 2013 and killed Dr. Roger and Mary Brumback. All had ties to Creighton University, Garcia’s former employer.
