Gov. Pete Ricketts says he doesn’t know what started the spat between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his family.
Trump tweeted recently that he understood the Ricketts family is secretly spending money against him and warned that they should be careful, because they have much to hide.
Ricketts declines to comment.
“Certainly, I’ve got a very politically active family. They care very much about this country and it’s active on both sides of the aisle,” Ricketts says. “So, my family does get involved in the different aspects of our public policy debate.”
Ricketts’ mother, Marlene Ricketts, has criticized Trump as not being consistently conservative and too unpredictable to be elected president.
It appears the Trump tweet was in response to the assessment.
Ricketts says he doesn’t know what Trump is referring to when he hinted his family had much to hide.
“I couldn’t even begin to guess at what the Twitter feed was referring to,” Ricketts says. “I note they didn’t even spell my name right.”
Ricketts has not endorsed anyone in the Republican presidential race. He earlier said he preferred governors, but all the governors other than Ohio Gov. John Kasich have dropped out. Ricketts says he might not endorse anyone.
