U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse states flatly he will not support Donald Trump is he wins the Republican nomination for president.
Sasse says lawmakers need to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and Sasse says the Constitution is something that Trump fails to mention.
“When you listen to Mr. Trump, he never talks about the Constitution. He doesn’t talk about executive restraint. He doesn’t talk about limited government. He essentially says things that are often fair about what is broken in Washington, but his solution is always more of him,” Sasse tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KFAB. “At the end of the day it is weird to have a guy significantly leading in a major political party in America and regularly praising dictators from across the globe.”
Former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke recently endorse Trump. Trump disavowed his support, but Sasse says this is just the tip of the iceberg.
“Let’s be clear what Donald Trump does. He niche markets. I’m not saying I think Donald Trump is a racist. I’m saying I don’t think Donald Trump has any core beliefs whatsoever and so when he goes in certain venues he absolutely race-baits,” according to Sasse. “He re-Tweets all these white supremacists. He is doing that as part of compiling a complicated marketing constituency.”
Sasse says Trump never uses the word govern but does talk about his “reign.” He says we don’t have people who reign in America because we don’t have kings.
Sasse says Trump’s philosophy is opposite of the American system where government should be populated by public servants. He says if Trump wins the GOP nomination, other conservative candidates will step up and throw their hat into the ring as an alternative candidate.
