The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says staff at the Nebraska State Penitentiary were securing inmates in their cells Wednesday evening when a guard directed an inmate to return to his cell. The inmate struck the guard. A nearby officer came to his aid to subdue the inmate. The inmate hit him as well.
The initial officer struck by the inmate was treated and released at a Lincoln hospital.
No names are being released.
“While I am deeply troubled by this event, I am proud of the quick and professional response of the staff who acted without hesitation,” State Corrections Director Scott Frakes said in a written statement released by the department. “By its very nature, working in corrections is inherently dangerous. Knowing that your team is there for you, no matter what, enables NDCS professionals to help keep Nebraska safe every day.”
The incident remains under investigation.
Three staff members at the state prison in Tecumseh were injured when inmates attacked them earlier this week.
