The Nebraska Department of Labor is reporting steady unemployment from December to January.
Phil Baker, director of Labor Market Information, says the rate for the beginning of the year is 3%.
“Total nonfarm employment for January, year to year, was up by 14, 917,” Baker tells Nebraska Radio Netowrk. “That took place in areas such as professional and business services, education and health services. We also saw that leisure and hospitality was up.”
Baker says unemployment is roughly the same as it was a year ago, when the rate was 2.9% and the labor force continues to be in the one million worker range.
“That’s kind of been where we’ve been staying at and maintaining that level,” Baker says. “It’s a good thing, because it’s showing the growth of the state.”
The Department reports the number of unemployment claims filed is down in 19 industries compared to last year.
