U.S. Senator Ben Sasse is praising the work of a fellow Nebraskan in getting the Obama administration to declare Islamic State atrocities as genocide.
Sasse says Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (NE-1) was relentless in bringing the issue to the forefront and steering a resolution through the U.S. House.
“ISIS has targeted Christians and Yezidis, and other religious minorities, but especially Christians and Yezidis, in parts of Syria and Iraq in ISIS-controlled territory,” Sasse tells Drive Time Lincoln host Kevin Thomas on Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN. “And they’ve been trying to exterminate populations based on creed.”
The Fortenberry-sponsored resolution urging the genocide declaration received unanimous approval in the U.S. House.
“Occasions of declaring genocide are very, very rare,” Sasse says. “They have implications for how the State Department then prioritizes resources.”
