A member of a highway construction crew has been killed and the driver of the car that struck the worker has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports 42-year-old John Hansen of Lincoln, a flagman on the construction crew, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday morning, a work zone on Highway 94 in Thurston County.
31-year-old Kenneth Gilpin of Walthill has been charged with Driving Under the Influence of Drugs and has been jailed in Thurston County.
According to NSP, the accident occurred around 9:30 Sunday morning about two miles east of Walthill on Highway 94.
“This is a senseless tragedy. Our thoughts are with family of the deceased and our partners at the Department of Roads,” Lt. Colonel Thomas Schwarten said in a written statement released by NSP. “As we move into the start of road construction season, it is the duty of all drivers to help ensure our road crews stay safe during this very busy time.”
NSP reminds motorists to use extra caution in work zones, obey posted speed limits, stay alert, and always be prepared keeping an eye out for workers and equipment.
