Roads closed Wednesday due to a snowstorm are open again.
Whiteout conditions forced the Nebraska Department of Roads to close I-80 in the Panhandle. Westbound I-76 into Colorado, U.S. 385, U.S. 20, and Nebraska 71 were also closed due to whiteout conditions. All of those routes are open to vehicles Thursday.
Kate Cotsakis with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne says wind was the main problem.
“Blowing snow was one of the biggest issues,” Cotsakis tells Nebraska Radio Network. “Wind gusts out in the Panhandle of 30-40 miles per hour caused a lot of problems. I know we had several reports of power outages, especially out by Kimball.”
Snowfall totaled about half a foot in Sidney and Lodgepool.
“Road conditions deteriorated really rapidly,” Cotsakis says. “We had visibility down to a quarter mile. Most of the roads (in the Panhandle) were closed down through the morning and afternoon hours (Wednesday), because plows couldn’t get out to clear the roads off.”
Cotsakis says wind gusts around Sidney were nearly 50 miles per hour.
