Bold Nebraska is taking up the issue President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland for the U-S Supreme Court. Founder Jane Kleeb says they are collecting signatures to encourage Nebraska U-S Senators Ben Sasse and Deb Fischer to not block hearings and vote yes or no on Garland’s nomination.
The U-S Constitution states the Senate will advise or consent or withhold their consent regarding the nomination. Kleeb says the U-S Senate is doing neither. She says, “They say they are not going to hold a nomination hearing at all and won’t even meet with the nominee. I think that is what is frustrating Americans about politics right now is that we can’t even have a hearing on a Supreme Court nominee – one of the highest courts that is determining a lot of critical issues we all care about.”
This has now turned into an election issue which Kleeb says can be either good or bad. She says, “I think that the Supreme Court is an election issue but I also think the Republicans have put themselves in a very dark corner. The reality is the Supreme Court nominee that President Obama, who is essentially a moderate Democrat, nominates is going to be a lot more moderate that the Supreme Court justice that Hillary Clinton nominates.”
