The parking lot at the new Baxter Arena on the University of Nebraska – Omaha campus will be a very busy place this week. It will be home to members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Organizer David Familetti says this is their 13th annual Just Can It event to help stock the shelves at the Salvation Army’s food pantry. He says the fundraiser actually started about two weeks ago.
Familetti says for the past two weeks members of the fraternity stood outside of grocery stores asking shoppers if they would care to donate to the cause. Today they are setting up cardboard homes at the Baxter Arena parking lot and will be camping out there through Friday. Familetti says, “We only stay in those cardboard boxes for a week. We always seem to plan the event the week of a serious rain storm and so with that it gets very tough to stay there. But, at the end of the week we get to go back to our homes. It is a moment of clarity as well because for some people it is a harsh reality. That is what motivates us to do what we can to help.”
Last year members of Pi Kappa Alpha collected 35,000 items for the Salvation Army Food Pantry. He encourages the public to drive by their homeless camp and help fill a truck parked there with food items for those in need.
