Last week’s big announcement that HDR decided against building their global headquarters in downtown Omaha is causing a lot of talk as to where they will locate and about future development in that area. This announcement follows news earlier that Con Agra is moving their headquarters to Chicago.
Omaha Chamber of Commerce President and CEO David Brown says Con Agra’s decision to move out of town was painful but they were able to keep many of their employees here in the city. He says we also can’t forget about all the great construction projects taking place downtown so there are many things to look forward to. He says while we would have loved to have had HDR downtown they will remain in Omaha and he is excited they are staying and building their global headquarters here.
Brown reminds Nebraskans there is a lot to look forward in the years to come. He says, “The riverfront plan is being developed and when that is done in the next couple of months we are going to see a dramatic downtown and riverfront strategy on both sides of the river. That will give us very clear indications of what kind of development will take place there and should. We need to bring people back down to the river and make it a place they choose to come down to than rather go to a fundraiser or something. We want them to recreate down there, eat and drink down there and have festivals down there.
Brown doubts that HDR will select another downtown location for their new headquarters and thinks they will build in either the midtown area or the former Ak-Sar-Ben property.
