Costco and Lincoln Premium Poultry announced Tuesday the proposed site for a new processing facility near Nickerson has been removed from consideration. This after many residents protested the idea of the plant in their community. They say they were not told about the proposed plant and were intentionally kept in the dark about the plan.
Cecilia Harry is the executive director of the Fremont Development Council says that isn’t the case at all. She says, “Some people are saying it is secrecy. For those of us who work these sort of projects daily it is confidentiality. We have been working on this project since July. With any business that is looking to grow or open a new location or anything like that, they are not going to announce that they are coming or who they are until they are confident they are coming.”
The Nickerson Board voted against rezoning a selected area for the plant. With that, Harry says Costco is still very interested in building a facility in the surrounding Fremont area.
Harry says, “We are still hearing from Costco that they really want to come to the greater Fremont area. I think that just speaks of strength of the community and our ability to provide the agriculture related components and the workforce related components. All of those metrics makes Costco come to greater Fremont and all we are trying to do is to find that right location within the area at this point.” She says Costco sees the bigger picture and that the Fremont area is the right place for them.
