University of Nebraska Medical Center students are holding a very special event this Friday. Dr. Kim Latacha is an assistant professor of genetics, cell biology and anatomy and says they are hosting a memorial service to recognize those who’ve donated their bodies to science and to thank their families for the generous gift.
Dr. Latacha says, “One donor has been studied by 250 students and each of those 250 students will graduate from this program and see thousands of patients in the course of their lifetime. The gift of just that one donor has amplified impact on the community and society for the knowledge they have gained and their ability to treat patients after. This is a great opportunity for these students to directly say to the family this was so meaningful to me and herre is the impact that gift is going to have. I think it is important for them to say it and I think it is important for the families to hear that message.”
First year medical, physician assistant, physical therapy and anatomy students will host this ceremony. Dr. Latacha says this is the only memorial service for many of the donors so typically around 600 people attend the event each spring.
The service is Friday from 6 until 7 p.m. on the UNMC campus.
