Dr. Hank Bounds, University of Nebraska president, says there needs to be more publicity of the work going on at the system’s four campuses.
He thinks there are too many good things going unnoticed.
“What we don’t do well is we don’t tell our story well,” Bounds told reporters at a news conference. “I think that’s part of the culture here – strong work ethic, sort of head down, plowing ahead.”
Bounds says part of his role as president is to talk up the research underway, so taxpayers, donors, and lawmakers are aware of the importance of that work.
He has been active on Twitter during his first year, tweeting and retweeting news about the campuses and its people.
“We’ve spent a lot of time and resources on trying to figure out – how do you get a 16 or 17 year old interested in something other than a video game or what’s going to happen on Saturday night? That’s a tough deal,” Bounds admitted.
Bounds wants more faculty, staff, and students promoting the research they are conducting to benefit the world.
“We need the athletics story to be told, but we need stories other than the athletics story to be told,” he said.
