Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz cancelled his rally in Nebraska today after suspending his campaign last night. Cruz lost Indiana to rival Donald Trump and Trump’s now within about 200 delegates of securing the nomination.
Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer now says she’ll back Trump.
“I’ve always said I’ll support the Republican nominee,” Fischer says. “I understand what the policies are that are held by Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders and I do not agree with those policies. Our country cannot continue down that road that they represent, so I’ll support the Republican nominee.”
Fischer says Trump now must focus on unifying the party.
“Mr. Trump is going to have to work hard to bring the party together,” she says. “He’s going to have to work hard to explain his stance on different issues and to talk about the principles and values he holds. I look forward to having a robust race here.”
Fischer had endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.
The other remaining Republican candidate John Kasich canceled his morning press conference today and will make a statement at 4 PM/Central in Columbus, Ohio.
