The Nebraska Department of Roads is developing a new alternative route to provide a long-term transportation solution for state Highway 12 between Santee and Niobrara. The highway near the Missouri River and Lewis & Clark Lake has flooded several times.
NDOR planning and project designer Mike Owen says they’re trying to create a plan the public would support and that can be permitted.
“We went to a public meeting in November and at the time, Alternative 7 was presented and it was an alternate that we had established could be permitted,” Owen says. “The public didn’t support it so we withdrew the application and went back to work following the public meeting.”
Planners are working up yet another new alternative called A-8.
Owen says, “Based on the input from the public, we feel the public would support it and we hope the public support in a future public meeting later this fall might benefit us in the permitting process.”
Public concerns include the fact the road is shaded part of the day, bringing problems with ice and drifting snow, in addition to flooding as it’s along a Missouri River bluff. The proposed road also made changes to multiple farming operations which drew opposition.
