Special lighted messages greet motorists along Interstate 80 throughout the summer traveling season.
The Nebraska Department of Roads along with the Nebraska State Patrol have started the “Friday Safety Message” campaign which features Dynamic Message Signs along I-80.
Deb Collins, with NSP, says it’s just another effort to keep Nebraskans safe.
“So it’s another visual reminder for folks that put that seat belt on, drive safely, watch out for the other guy, and have a great holiday weekend,” according to Collins.
The lighted, electronic signs will display safety messages, the number of traffic fatalities during the year, and reminders of any major events planned during the weekend.
“We believe anything extra that we can do to help people remember and to maybe set off that little spark that says, ‘Hey, oh yeah, I didn’t buckle up. Let me put my seat belt on.’ Anything that we can do to help get the word out encourages motorists for voluntary compliance.”
In addition to the special Friday messages, NDOR is joining with state and local law
enforcement in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign to encourage motorists to buckle up. That campaign runs through Sunday, June 5th.
Triple A expects near record travel volume this Memorial Day holiday weekend with as many as 34-Million motorists expected to hit the road.
