Two Nebraska lakes are on the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation’s Top 100 list.
Lake McConaughy landed in the 59th spot, while Harlan County Reservoir is ranked 94th.
Colby Johnson, superintendent of Lake McConaughy State Recreational Area, says from fishing and water sports to hiking and biking – the site has it all.
“Pretty much anything you can do outdoors, you can do on the beaches of Lake McConaughy,” Johnson tells Nebraska Radio Network.
Criteria for the Top 100 included having a public body of water within driving distance of a major city, good fishing opportunities, and family-friendly amenities.
“All the amenities that, whether it be a family of anglers or an angler with a family along with ‘em that can come out and use the park and not only do we have good ones,” Johnson says of Lake McConaughy, “but we have a lot, spread all around the lake.”
Pat Underwood, Harlan County Tourism Office director, says the Harlan County Reservoir’s easy accessibility makes it popular.
“Plenty of opportunities for people to get up close to the water or fish off of the rocks off the dam,” Underwood tells Nebraska Radio Network.
The lake covers 13,250 acres and is located just above the border with Kansas.
Underwood says visitors to the Harlan County Reservoir have been steadily increasing over the past decade, and this publicity should convince more to come.
“They might have been thinking about where to come and might have been looking at several lakes,” she says, “so being on that list certainly does help them make a decision.”
