Attendance at the 2016 College World Series is down a bit this year. Several reasons are possibly the extreme heat and smaller schools making the series and fewer fans traveling for the event. Omaha Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Executive Director Keith Backsen says events like the CWS and the U.S. Olympic Swim trials really help put the city and surrounding area on the map.
Backsen says, “Anytime we can get national or international exposure is a huge win for us. Every day we are out selling our story outside this marketplace. Many times people have a perception about this city and so having big events like this with great coverage at night showing the city skyline helps validate the reason why we are out promoting Omaha as a place to visit.”
The average attendance per game at the CWS is just under 21,000, down about 2,000 from last year’s average. Backsen says tourism over the next few weeks will be excellent for the city. The U.S. Olympic Swim Trials start Sunday and that event is a complete sellout.
