Scammers are upping their game and Nebraskans need to be aware of their new tactics. Lt. Brian Richards with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office says they have found a better way of trying to get money out of innocent victims by using the missed jury duty scam.
Lt. Richards says, “Scammers are legitimizing the process by using actual names, going on websites from sheriff’s offices and government entities so people can actually look up real names. It does seem to legitimize the scam but any time they solicit money from you should be a red flag.” He says they never conduct business in that manner or solicit money by phone.
Victims are told they can clear the warrant by paying a fine between $100 and $1,000 and are then instructed to buy a pre-paid money card and call back with the access code. He says so far one person has fallen victim to the scam.
