The Walking Monk has made it to Nebraska. Bhaktimarga Swami has been a Hare Krishna monk for the past 43 years and started their tradition of extreme walking about 20 years ago. He lives in Canada and has walked across that country four times. He has also made his way on foot across Israel, Ireland, Trinidad and Guyana. This time he is walking across the U.S. He started in Boston and is following the Old Lincoln Highway route across the country.
Swami says, “I’m walking to connect with people and make a green statement. I’m trying to say maybe it is not a bad idea to use this body for what it is meant for and that is walking. Getting back to basics is the message. We are moving a bit too fast and take some time for reflection.”
Swami says he has seen lots of corn so far in the Midwest and loved the trails system. He says, “The people, they are really nice to me. There is not going to be a strong judgmental attitude towards me even though I’m wearing my orange robes which is part of our tradition as a monk. I’m sometimes get mistaken from being an escapee from a prison. That has happened quite a few times.” He then chuckles and says “what to do?”
Swami says everyone has heard of the great American dream and if it is somewhere he guesses it is in Nebraska and Iowa. He says people here are leading a very “neat” life.
