The petition drive effort to achieve ballot access fell about 1,000 signatures short, according to the secretary of state’s office.
Organizers needed to collect valid signatures totaling at least one percent of the total votes cast for governor in 2014. That equates to 5,395 signatures.
The Marijuana Party’s effort gathered 4,353 valid signatures.
Organizers also failed to meet the requirement that signatures equal at least one percent of the total votes cast for governor in each of Nebraska’s three congressional districts in 2014.
The Marijuana Party supports the legalization of hemp along with medical and recreational marijuana use.
