As children leave the nest to further their educations, Nebraska parents need to make sure their college-bound kids have the right property insurance when they’re living away from home.
Insurance advisor Russ Dubisky says some type of insurance is a must in today’s college world, as they likely are taking along several thousand dollars worth of possessions.
“Just think about all the valuable things you’re taking with you to campus or that off-campus apartment and think about how much it would cost to replace everything, expensive iPads, laptops, books, clothes, etcetera,” Dubisky says.
He says parents have to make sure whatever coverage they take out is the right amount.
“Deductibles are going to vary on the individual,” he says. “What we encourage folks to do is talk to their local insurance agent.”
Dubisky says if the child is in a dorm room on campus, there may be limited coverage through parents’ homeowners, but that’s not the case if they’re in an apartment off-campus.
