Tornado sirens sounded in several eastern Nebraska communities Thursday afternoon when a severe storm system moved through the state. Heavy rain, strong wind and hail were reported in many areas north of I-80. More than five inches alone fell in Stanton County flooding creeks and rivers. That prompted the Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District to close all Elkhorn River access locations in Douglas County.
General Manager John Winkler says they are also closing the Elkhorn Crossing Campground. He says, “Anytime you get big rains up north and to the west we see elevated river levels here. We’ll probably keep them closed until the middle of next week. This time of year we see a decrease in use but still we want to keep everyone safe.” Campgrounds along the river are also closed.
