Two inmates with homemade weapons assaulted a staff member at the Nebraska State Penitentiary Wednesday.
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says chemicals had to be used to end the assault. The staffer has been treated and released at a Lincoln hospital.
“We house many violent and dangerous individuals, but we will not tolerate violence within our prisons,” State Corrections Director Scott Frakes said in a written statement released by NDCS. “We will continue to hold accountable those involved in orchestrating and carrying out violent acts.”
Frakes says the state penitentiary has modified operations in wake of the incident.
No names are being released.
“Individuals who assault others are held accountable through the internal disciplinary process, which includes the potential loss of good time and other sanctions. They are assigned to restrictive housing based on the risk they present to others,” according to Frakes. “In addition, assaults are investigated, and the results referred to the local county attorney.”
