U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer
United States Sen. Deb Fischer says she will stick with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, though stating she is disgusted by comments he made in a 2005 video.
Trump made lewd remarks about women in the video.
Fischer says she remains committed to the Republican ticket.
“Well, like most Nebraskans, I am fully committed to defeating Hillary Clinton. I support the Republican ticket and I plan to vote for Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence on November 8th,” Fischer tells Coby Mach, host of Drive Time Lincoln on Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN.
Fischer had seemed to be distancing herself from Trump after the video caused an uproar of criticism. Many Republicans withdrew their support.
“I know you know I put out a statement on Friday and it was with regard to Mr. Trump’s comments,” Fischer says. “I felt they were disgusting. I felt they were unacceptable. But, I never said I was not voting for our Republican ticket.”
Fischer had asked Trump to step aside in favor of Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence. Fischer says when Trump decided to remain in the race, she decided to continue to support him. Fischer says she will continue to support the Republican ticket despite Trump’s lewd comments about women.
“As a woman and as a Republican, it was very upsetting to hear him make those remarks,” according to Fischer. “But, I know that he believes in the policies that I do with regards to regulation and tax reform and that’s what we need. What we need to do is to defeat Hillary Clinton.”
Fischer rejects calls to write in Pence on November 8th.
“We do have a choice here and it’s a choice between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and if you want your vote to count, you will vote for one or the other.”
