Some Nebraska ranchers are upset with an inspection fee being proposed by the Nebraska Brand Committee.
Dave Wright, of Neligh, president of the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska, says the fee would unfairly penalize most livestock producers and benefit feedlots.
Wright says the brand committee will have to take the proposal to the Unicameral to draft legislation.
“In my mind, that’s bad business and it would be bad for the law all the way around,” Wright says. “You can’t expect one segment of an industry to get an incredible break and expect the other segment to carry the load.”
Wright says many of the problems with the Brand Committee are mired in politics.
“Two of the newest appointees are appointed by our new governor and they’re just hell bent for leather to make sure the feed lots get a reduction,” Wright says. “So, these are political appointments, it strongly appears, doing political favors.”
Wright is also concerned after the brand committee accepted the resignation of its former director and then rehired him for a new position within the panel.
