After leading South Dakota to three consecutive Summit League titles Amy Williams debuts as the Nebraska women’s basketball coach on Saturday when the Huskers host Texas Rio Grande Valley in the Preseason WNIT. With a young team and a new system Williams expects growing pains.
“It has taken some time and it will take some time to work through that”, said Williams. “Unfortunately when you are facing this type of competition so early some things will be highlighted and it forces you to grow up quickly.”
The Huskers face a challenging non-conference slate that includes a visit by defending national champion UConn.
Sophomore Jessica Shepard and senior Allie Havers combined to score 44 points in the Huskers’ exhibition victory over Southwest Baptist.
“It is natural that early those are the players that we lean on but we are going to have to find some other players who will step up and help carry the load.”
Texas Rio Grande Valley finished 19-15 a year ago and played in the post season WNIT.
