An all clear has been issued for the Kearney campus of the University of Nebraska after a suspicious package proved to pose no threat.
The “all clear” was issued about three-and-a-half hours after a faculty member reported the suspicious bag located outside the Fine Arts Building.
The report prompted university officials to evacuate three buildings on campus around 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon: the Fine Arts Building, the Health and Sports Center, and the Cushing Coliseum. About 400 students, faculty, and staff had to leave the buildings, including more than 40 children in the Child Development Center.
Events and evening classes were canceled. Campus activities are to return to normal tomorrow.
The Nebraska State Patrol responded to the campus. An investigation of the bag discovered no explosive device or anything that posed a threat to the public. UNK Police, Kearney Police Department, Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, and EMS personnel assisted in the response.
