Now that the holiday shopping season has arrived, retailers in Nebraska are taking extra steps to avoid theft. Omaha Police Officer Jacob Bettin is also the co-owner of Frontline Security and he says this is also the busy season for the bad guy.
Bettin says, “We usually increase staffing by 20% to 30% at all of our locations just to make sure customers are not taken advantage of during the holiday season. Typically we will see increases in theft throughout the season and robberies just because we have some criminals out there that want to make sure they have a good Christmas season too and take advantage of others.”
Retailers often hire more loss prevention agents to protect inventory but Bettin says customers are often victims in parking lots. He says there are many robberies while the victims are walking to and from cars. Many times the thief wants the victims vehicle along with their money and purchases. Bettin says shoppers need to be alert at all times and take extra precautions to protect themselves.
Small business owners often can’t afford the luxury of hiring extra security during the holidays but Bettin says there are things they can do to prevent property loss. He recommends investing in a good security camera system. They are affordable and the quality is good. When customers enter it is a good idea to make contact with them so they know they are being watched. He says never let a customer walk around the store without being serviced.
