One of the most heartbreaking news stories in the last 15 years was the murder of three year old Brendan Gonzalez in January of 2003. He was reported missing by his mother, Rebecca Fleming who then lived in Plattsmouth. The boy’s father, Ivan Henk admitted he killed his son and put him inside a dumpster at a Bellevue apartment building. He is serving a life prison sentence.
That dumpster was emptied at the Sarpy County Landfill. There was an extensive search but the boy’s body was never found.
The landfill will soon close and Fleming would like to see something very special built on her son’s final resting place. She contacted officials at Sarpy County and they are on board with putting up a memorial for Brendan at the landfill location and they hope to have it finalized this spring.
Fleming says, “I would love for it to be a park one day, when it is closed and grassed over and all of that just because it would be a nice place to see families playing with their children. Parents enjoying their kids.”
Fleming says it has been a long journey but finally the good days outnumber the bad ones.
