A traffic stop on Interstate 80 resulted in the capture of an international drug cartel member.
The Seward County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from Lancaster County deputies about a car traveling westbound on I-80.
Seward County Sergeant Mike Vance stopped the car with passenger Jesus Ramon Buena-Peregina of Arizona.
Buena-Peregina is a federal fugitive convicted of possession and distribution of twenty kilos of cocaine.
He also is a lieutenant in the Sinaloa Drug Cartel.
A news release from Seward County states Buena-Peregina was deported for prior felonies, but returned to the United States to commit another drug crime. A warrant for his arrest has been active for four years.
A passport and ID’s found on Buena-Peregina were fake, according to the sheriff’s office.
The U.S. Marshal Service has the 39 year old in custody.
The driver of the car, 27 year old Vanessa Lopez-Pena of Arizona, was arrested and charged with accessory to a felony. She is being held in the Seward County Jail.
Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies assisted Seward County in the traffic stop and arrests.
