A truck driver is dead following a fiery crash on U.S. Highway 77.
Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says it happened around 6:00 A.M. Tuesday morning, north of Lincoln.
“According to witnesses, a rock truck was proceeding westbound on Waverly Road, stopped at the stop sign at Highway 77, began crossing Waverly Road, and struck a southbound semi-truck hauling grain,” Wagner told reporters at a morning news conference.
The grain truck driver, 21-year old Brian Gerdes of Osmand, Neb., died at the scene.
“The grain truck burst into flames following impact and tipped over on its side,” Wagner says. “The rock truck driver was transported to one of the area hospitals for serious, but stable, injuries.”
The driver of the rock truck was identified as 67-year old Gary Jacobsen of Garland, Neb.
“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash,” Wagner says. “It does not appear seatbelts were in use by the rock truck driver. We don’t know about the grain truck driver at this point.”
The crash investigation is ongoing.
