Ralston Police are accepting food donations in exchange for parking ticket fines

December 9, 2016 By Karla James

The Ralston Police Department is giving drivers a chance to clear their parking violation history during the holiday season. Chief Ron Murtaugh says Food For Fines was such a success last year they decided continue the tradition this year.

Chief Murtaugh says violators can clear their record by donating five non-perishable food items per ticket no matter how old or how many penalties were added. Those who no longer have their ticket can go to the police department and they will look up the violation.  Violators can then go purchase the food and bring it back to clear their names off the books.

The Baright Public Library is also in the Christmas spirit. Those with overdue books can clear their fines by bringing in one non-perishable food donation for each account.

Chief Murtaugh says last year several hundred of pounds of food was donated during the Fines For Food program. All the food donated goes to help the Food Bank for the Heartland.

Chief Murtaugh says those with parking violations know it is just a matter of time before it catches up to them. This is a great way to clear your record and make a donation to a great cause.  Food For Fines runs through December 23rd.
