Quarterback Tommy Armstrong was in street clothes as the Nebraska football team opened practice for the December 30 Music City Bowl against Tennessee. Armstrong struggled with an injured hamstring in a 40-10 loss to Iowa and coach Mike Riley says Ryker Fyfe is taking the first team snaps.
“Tommy is not practicing”, said Riley. “We are going forward as if Ryker is going to start and until we gain any new information we have to look at it that way.”
The Huskers are 9-3 and will play a Volunteer team that finished the regular season 8-4 and was 21st in the final College Football Playoff rankings.
The start of practice also included new Huskers assistant coach Donte Williams. The former Arizona assistant will coach the Nebraska cornerbacks.
“Anytime you get a chance to work with great people that is big”, said Williams. “The community has been outstanding. This is a great set for me and my life.”
