Plenty “holiday” names on Nebraska’s unclaimed property list

December 13, 2016 By Karla James

The Nebraska State Treasurer’s office is busy every day trying to get property back in the hands of the rightful owners. Out of the 350,000 names in their unclaimed property rolls Treasurer Don Stenberg says there are some very seasonal names on the list.

There are 40 Dasher’s, 29 Dancer’s and one Prancer. There are 67 Donner’s, two Comet’s, one Cupid and 44 Rudolph’s.  There are 85 unclaimed properties under the name of Holiday, four listings under Christmas, 75 with the name Joy, 43 with Jesus, 22 listings under Merry and four Santa’s.

Stenberg says this is a fun way to bring attention to the fact they are holding unclaimed property totaling more than $170-million.

Stenberg says, “It can be an uncashed paycheck. Maybe the person moved away before they got their last paycheck and it never caught up with them.  It can be refunds, rental deposits, utility deposits that you forgot to reclaim before you moved.  Stocks, bonds, life insurance payments and some even lose track of their IRA’s.  Sometimes it is because there has been a death in the family and the relatives didn’t know the property existed.”

Stenberg says they have been successful this year reaching out to property owners for whom they are holding significant amounts. More than $11.8-million was returned to owners in 2015 with a total of 15,368 claims.  So far this year the office has exceeded last year’s totals.

You can search for unclaimed property by logging on to www.treasurer.nebraska.gov and go to the unclaimed property tab. For an amount less than $500 an owner can file a claim online through the website.  The owner must include the required information.  For an amount greater than $500 an owner must complete the claim form and mail it to the State Treasurer’s Office.
