Santa may be watching to see who is naughty or nice but so is the Nebraska State Patrol. Sergeant John Olsen is with the Omaha Troop and says starting tomorrow, December 15th they are taking part in the national “You Drink & Drive You Lose” campaign in an effort to remove impaired drivers from our roadways. He says the State Patrol is asking those celebrating the holidays to play it smart and have a plan in place if you plan on drinking at a holiday party.
Sergeant Olsen says, “The time to make the decision on using a designated driver, a taxi service or Uber is before you start to drink and enjoy the holiday party. Make the decision before you go out that night that this is how we are going to handle it. Once you start drinking judgment can out the window and it is too late. You could end up driving and getting yourself in trouble or worse causing a very serious situation.”
A $27,375 grant from the Nebraska Department of Roads – Highway Safety office is paying for the extra enforcement and Sergeant Olsen says they will have as many troopers on the roadways as possible watching for impaired drivers. The extra enforcement runs through Sunday, January 1st.
