Busiest mailing day of the year at Nebraska post offices

December 19, 2016 By Karla James

More than 1.5 million cards, letters and packages are expected to be mailed in Nebraska and southwest Iowa today. Postal spokesperson Roger Humphries says today is the busiest mailing day of the year so those heading to the post office need to pack some extra patience.  He says they are trying their best to get everyone moved through as quickly as possible.

Humphries says, “There are lines after lines but we are staffing our lobbies with folks to help. They will walk around and help you figure out what you need to mail that package.  If it is a label or you have a question about insurance or any type of mailing they will be there to help you.  We will also be able to sell stamps in the lobby so that will speed it up also.”

Humphries says 62,000 pieces of mail will be processed each hour at Nebraska Post Offices today. That breaks down to 1,000 per minute or 17 per second.

Nebraska and southwest Iowa postal carriers are projected to deliver a record 3.2 million packages this holiday season, a 12% increase compared to last year. The busiest delivery day for postal carriers will be Thursday.
