Members of the Omaha Fire Union took time today and stopped by Children’s Hospital and Medical Center to spread some Christmas cheer. Coordinator Ryan Loewenstein organizes the annual event and for him it is a labor of love.
Loewenstein says, “This began with myself seven or eight years ago getting together with other members of my union. The members and their families contribute the money and the toys and come here on what would have been my son’s birthday who passed nine years ago to give some holiday cheer to kids who are stuck in the hospital.”
Firefighters were joined by Santa for the big event and went room to room to pass out gifts to children of all ages. Loewenstein says toys included rattles for infants to drones and tablets for older kids. He says there are roughly 100 children in the hospital every Christmas which is 100 families that need to be with their child. Loewenstein says if we can give a family five minutes to forget their problems with a gift it is well worth the time and effort.
