Nebraska coach Mike Riley fired defensive coordinator Mark Banker following a 9-4 season that saw the Huskers lose four of their last six games. The defense struggled late in season, giving up 408 yards in a 40-10 loss at Iowa and 521 yards in a 38-24 loss to Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. Banker coached with Riley the past 20 years, including 14 at Oregon State before spending the last two at Nebraska.
“I want to thank Mark for his hard work and contributions to our football program the past two years and for all of his service and dedication as a member of my other coaching staffs,” said Riley. “We will conduct a national search to find a great coach, teacher and recruiter as we continue our pursuit of championships.”
Defensive backs coach Brian Stewart is also leaving the program. He will reportedly become the next defensive coordinator at Rice and Director of Player Personnel Ryan Gunderson is leaving to pursue an on-field coaching position.
