UNO student-athlete killed in hit-and-run near Waverly

January 15, 2017 By Brent Martin

A student-athlete at the University of Nebraska at Omaha has been killed in an apparent hit-and-run.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reports 19-year-old Merzedes Hart of Council Bluffs, Iowa died Friday night after being hit by a car near Waverly.

Hart was a freshmen member of the Mavericks’ track and field team. She studied business at UNO

The sheriff’s office reports emergency crews responded to a call near the Shakers Gentlemen’s Club on U.S. 6 late Friday night.

Hart died at the scene. Authorities have ordered an autopsy be conducted.

The UNO track team was in Lincoln for the weekend, competing at the Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational. Hart had not been scheduled to compete in the meet.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle that hit Hart left the scene. Later the driver was located. No arrests have been made as of yet.

Hart was a four-year letter winner at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs.
