Watson injured as Creighton edges No. 19 Xavier

January 16, 2017 By Todd Kimm

Maurice Watson Jr.

Justin Patton tipped in a missed shot with 49 seconds remaining to give Creighton the lead for good as the seventh ranked Bluejays edged 19th ranked Xavier 72-67 in a BIG EAST thriller in Cincinnati. The Jays won despite losing senior guard Maurice Watson. The nation’s leader in assists suffered a knee injury in the first half and did not return to the game.

“There was no structural ligament damage according to the trainers which is a good sign”, said Watson. “Right now I have got to live in the training room and try to get back for my team.”

Watson will undergo further evaluation when the Jays return to Omaha.

“At the end of the day things happen and it is not a perfect world”, added Watson. “While I don’t want to go down it is a possibility and I have a hundred percent trust in my guys.”

Marcus Foster led Creighton with 15 points and Toby Hegner added 12 as the Jays improve to 5-1 in the league race and 18-1 overall for the first time in program history.
